Established in 2001, the .NAME universal domain extension is the only one intended for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained online.
